What is Decoding and Encoding?

Encoding/decoding is a communication model that provides a theoretical approach to how messages are generated, disseminated and understood in the media. It was first popularised in the 1970s and tells media users that there are many ways they can use to interpret media content.

This exists everywhere in our lives, such as images, text and videos on top of major social media. When people receive this information, they will have different opinions, depending on the individual’s level of understanding and different positions.

Example

She is a blogger who does ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) video types. This type of video makes the viewer drowsy during or after viewing by rubbing objects or making oral sounds, and is usually aimed at people who are poor sleepers or insomniacs.


She is a very distinctive style of video, categorising her videos as an ASMR channel, and the videos are also titled with ASMR characters.

Most people are positive and encouraging, but the truth is that there are some people who will comment who are not very friendly. I thought her video would help me have a better sleep and when I shared it with my friend, he said he couldn’t sleep well after listening to it.

Conclusion

Overall, although social media has brought convenience to people, there will be disagreement because of the difference in each person’s understanding point of view. Our lives are full of decoding and encoding, so it is important to express ourselves rationally in order to better communicate and understand each other.
